Discovery Sessions 004 w/ Shmitty

1441086001843

Welcome to a special Discovery Session as we celebrate our two year anniversary here at So Cal Edm Events. We are proud to have one of our local favorites and friends to SCEE Shmitty at the helm. We decided to choose him on this date in particular because of what he means to us, it was him who made us take SCEE a little more serious and gave us the opening to start provided all of you all the awesome deals and hooks ups you enjoy today. So here we go with Shmitty, his exclusive mix and questionnaire for us, enjoy!

BGnew1

So Cal Edm Events (SCEE): Thank you for taking the time to answer this interview let’s start off simple what is your name? What do you go by? Are you from southern California? If not where are you from? And what genre of electronic music do you play?

Shmitty (S): My name is Matthew Smit, and I go by Shmitty. I was born in the Netherlands and moved to Los Angeles when I was 4. I play mostly house & techno.

SCEE: How long have you been producing/Djing? What inspired you to become a producer? Who is your biggest inspiration? Do you have any residencies locally?

S: I have been DJing for about 3-4 years and producing for about 2 years. John Digweed is by far my biggest inspiration, he is one that is always on top of his game and constantly searching for new tracks. I am a resident DJ at Exchange LA

11893893_1097851346895866_661937595908816558_o

SCEE: What has been the biggest festival/Club you’ve played at? How was that experience? Was it memorable? What would you change?

S:The biggest show I’ve played was Cosmic Gate + Andrew Rayel @ The Hollywood Palladium. I got to play 3hrs to a sold out crowd! I wouldnt change a thing, it was amazing.

SCEE:  Where do you plan on being in five years career wise?

S: I plan on not doing much different :p, writing music I love with friends, and playing shows for people who like our music.

11882669_1097851186895882_1374615706404663621_o-300x200

SCEE: A lot of people will be reading this article, if you could tell them something about yourself to maybe support you what would you say?

S:I never prepare for sets. I mean, i have music folders organized for all sorts of occasions…but I never prep the set. The music I pick is all on the fly and influenced by the vibe that I’m getting from the venue, crowd, etc.

SCEE: We have a great deal of followers following us, what would you tell the people who are going to hear this to expect from your mini mix? What do you want to them to take note of?

S: I recently started the Minimal Sessions brand which focuses on techno, so this set is similar to what my Minimal Sessions partys vibe is going for.

SCEE: What do you do outside of music?

S: I love traveling. I work for insomniac so I get to travel when we do shows in other states. One of my favorite things is seeing what other states & countries have to offer.

SCEE:  What do you think of the current scene? Do you think new people need to freshen up the scene?

S: I think a lot of people are freshening up the scene. So many great talents are emerging everyday.

11893947_1070273469657358_2403245435704494880_o

SCEE: Finish this sentence… Music is

S: Universal

SCEE: Lastly we’d like to thank you for participating, for anyone interested in following you more where can they do so?

Discovery Sessions w/ Jacques Cousteau 003

1439961669663

Welcome to another edition of Discovery Sessions, this week I’m happy to present to you another talent his name is Jacques Cousteau. I had the pleasure of seeing him at one of his events inside Create Nightclub a couple of weeks ago and invited him to take part in this project of ours. Check out what he has to say in our questionnaire and find his Discovery Sessions down below! Enjoy!

1920134_1551384398442450_8205528102905202534_n

So_Cal_Edm_Events (SCEE): Thank you for taking the time to answer this interview let’s start off simple what is your name?

Jacques Cousteau (JC): I was born Theodore Alexander Brown, my nickname is Teddy.

SCEE: What do you go by?

JC: I go by the name of Jacques Cousteau since 2013 before that I went under several names before ending up with this one. I was formerly J.O.C. but John O’Callaghan was dubbed with that name. So under the direction of DJ YO-C I changed the name to Jacques Cousteau.

SCEE: Are you from southern California? If not where are you from?

JC: I am not from southern California. I have lived here in SoCal for the past 10 years. I am originally from a small town in upstate New York called Poughkeepsie in a subsection district known as Arlington bordering Vassar College and IBM Headquarters.

SCEE: And what genre of electronic music do you play?

JC: I play a sound I would like to call Luxury House, which is a mixture of French House, which is almost always the foundation of my sound. I add a little bit of Tech House. I sprinkle in Indie House sparingly. A dash of Nu Disco combined with house music. Then the cherry alamode Deep House. Which combined creates a very Luxury Sound, rich, deep bass lines with soul & funk for days. Some have called it the Luxury Funk of Jacques Cousteau. Essential Mix quality track selection and execution.

11796246_1628913317356224_7141881641652318123_n

SCEE: How long have you been producing/Djing?

JC: I have been producing since 2010 with electronic music and formerly with rock since 1998. I have been DJing since 1994 I started on cassettes then cd then vinyl in 1998.

SCEE: What inspired you to become a producer?

JC: I would have to say that being around my Friend Mark Lamorg from Streetlab in Junior College seeing him make tracks with propeller head software. Also the chemical brothers are another huge inspiration to me. I used to be a Bass Player in a Heavy Metal Band Back in 93-94 and once I heard Setting Sun I left the metal scene in the tri state area and became immersed in dance music. Also I just hear the music in my head and had to start making it into a tangible thing.

SCEE: Who is your biggest inspiration?

JC: My Biggest Inspiration is my mother she got me into music very young and taught me how to dance at a very early age. We would dance around our basement for hours. She also taught me how to memorize title and artist of a song. She helped me identify bands by there sound. She had strong opinions about music and through that I built a standard by which I pick music to this day. My brother is another huge inspiration he was making mix tapes while I was in Kindergarten. He also turned me onto Hall and Oates, EPMD, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and The Beastie Boys among other great artists that influence me to this day; he called himself DJ Quick Brown Fox. My sister is also another major influence of mine. She would sneak into the Limelight NYC when she was 16 and tell me all these crazy stories of what goes on. She also opened my eyes and ears to a whole other world that existed. So from 12 years old all I wanted to do was go clubbing and hear dance music.

SCEE: Do you have any residencies locally?

JC: I currently work with a few groups within Los Angeles regularly and hold residency with them.

10502517_1626915427556013_8049948790657853049_n

SCEE: What has been the biggest festival/Club you’ve played at? How was that experience? Was it memorable? What would you change?

JC: The Biggest Club I have played is Exchange La so far. That was the most amazing and exciting experience in my life. It was a dream come true, bucket list dream come true type deal.  It was one of the most exciting and memorable nights of my life and I would not trade it for anything I dropped a set so Fuego even I was blown away at how smooth it went for 90 minutes!

SCEE:  Where do you plan on being in five years career wise?

JC: In Five Years I plan on having an entire stage show that will blow peoples minds when it comes to their city and tour regularly as well as releasing entire albums of original tunes.

SCEE: A lot of people will be reading this article, if you could tell them something about yourself to maybe support you what would you say?

JC: If you come to my show you will see a Cosplay Artist in a translucent suit playing the most amazing music and visual experience you have ever experienced and dancing with the crowd. So different than anything you will hear and see in the Los Angeles scene. You may buy a $20 ticket but I am going to give you a $100 performance every time! I will take you on a magical Journey leaving you wanting more every time! Someone who unselfishly makes everything for the intention of making you have they best night of your life and dance your ass off. Just think of me as the guy who doesn’t make the party, he makes the party better by playing the best sound track you will ever hear. I pride myself on my musical selection and unique style that you don’t really hear anymore. Breaking new tunes, which you have not heard before. I am a man who followed his dreams and gives it 110% every show!

SCEE: We have a great deal of followers following us, what would you tell the people who are going to hear this to expect from your mini mix? What do you want to them to take note of?

JC: You are going to hear something dramatically different than your everyday mix you are going to hear an artist at work. I am going to take you on a voyage in my submarine. You will experience a magical journey into the foreign waters.

Take note of the 80’s Influence, funky bass lines as well as the sick drums and use of real instruments carefully crafting the Luxury House funk sound of Jacques Cousteau.

SCEE: What do you do outside of music?

JC: Outside of Music I am a classically trained working actor. I have been on a few tv shows. I also edit and produce small projects on the side. As well as having a 9 to 5 job in the financial services industry.

1610949_1618695941711295_3317850739691668690_n

SCEE:  What do you think of the current scene? Do you think new people need to freshen up the scene?

JC: The Current scene is amazing everyone is super passionate in Los Angeles and helpful of other DJ and producers. We all get along and I love working with the local DJ and producers. Los Angeles is a super hot scene and the whole country is watching LA right now. So it’s a great time to be part of the current scene.

New people all the time are freshening up the scene. It’s just a natural cycle of the industry. I just wish people would catch on sooner to great dj and producers that are out there already. Also SCEE for spotlighting local talent.

SCEE: Finish this sentence,  Music is…

JC: the one thing that can bring peace love unity and respect to the world and make the world a better place.

SCEE: Lastly we’d like to thank you for participating, for anyone interested in following you more where can they do so?

JC: Shout out to So Cal Edm Events/SCEE for allowing me to do the mini mix. So follow So Cal Edm Events.

The Banana Movement

IMG_5321
It’s a nice Sunday afternoon in Venice and the boardwalk is alive with people from all walks of life. I’m there waiting to meet the members of the Banana Movement, and given that this is our first meeting I don’t really know who I’m looking for; all of a sudden I see the tops of bananas headed in my direction. Each greets me warmly with smiles so genuine it’s hard not to smile right back and it suddenly strikes me that this is what their whole movement is about; being genuinely happy and spreading that happiness to as many people as possible. Soon we are involved in a conversation of their origins and what has brought them together and it involves a chance encounter at a park and a friend falling off a cliff (don’t worry she lived and is doing great!)
IMG_5327  IMG_5338
So how does a friend falling off a cliff turn into good luck? Well it turns out that thanks to her fall, Cody, Dante, and Trey were able to attend their first festival together and not just any festival but the most coveted of the West Coast festivals, the Electric Daisy Carnival. So while it seems that serendipity may have brought Cody, Trey, and Dante together, their love of Bananas and Champagne is what kept them connected. If you ask them why they chose Dada Life all three will say it was the music first and foremost with Trey specifically noting that it was the album Rules of the Dada that opened his eyes up to a level of production and music making that, as a producer himself, blew his mind and sealed his love for all things Dada.
IMG_5333
The trio describe their road to Dada land Citizenship a little differently than the first two passholders.  Cody explains that the first Dadalife passport holder is a mystery to them as it started with a scavenger hunt before an overseas Dadaland compound, with the second going to a super fan from Vegas who was incredibly involved in the Dadaland app, first premiered months ago by Dadalife themselves. Although the group thought app involvement was vital to passport procurement, it turns out that community involvement is much more important to the powers that be. As Cody puts it what Dadalife is really looking for is “people wishing to show their true fanship and the desire to bring a community together and that’s exactly what we did with our Instagram Banana Movement.” And their reward for all their hard work? A personal invitation from Dadalife to attend their Compound show in San Jose, I’ll take a minute to let you pick your jaw up off the floor.
IMG_5331 IMG_5329
When asked about their greatest experience so far, Trey is quick to talk about the presentation of the passports at the San Jose, CA stop of the Dada Land Compound tour.  Cody explains that it wasn’t just a simple pick up, but instead more akin to a high school graduation with the crew lining the hallways clapping as they were called to the green room for the official ceremony and complete with an interview and film crew. Dante says he never thought he would be so lucky and recalls with a smile on his face, the end of the Dada Land Compound tour in Vegas where the trio were given their very own champagne shower on stage at Hakkassan Las Vegas where Dada life hold a residency. The memory prompts massive smiles from the rest of the guys as Dante squeals “IT WAS SO AWESOME“.
IMG_5325
As for the biggest lesson they have learned on their journey so far, the trio does not hesitate to answer with a resounding response of family first. They say the banana movement wants to above all remind its followers that Dada Life is not just Stefan and Ollie, but a large group of people behind the scenes who are really the strength and power behind the group’s success. Much the same, the success of the Banana Movement will hinge on their connection to an already large community of fans. But don’t fret, future already looks bright, as with the help of their fourth member / business manager Danielle, they have begun branching out selling t-shirts and banana suits from their Etsy. She explains that their goal is to spread their movement and bring their message of acceptance and liberation of the spirit to the worldwide masses with their ultimate goal of maintaining the anything is possible spirit of Dadalife. And in the end, it’s much more than champagne and going insane, although still very important, it’s about family first. Cody summarizes it best; “fans are first, FANS ARE FIRST, and that’s exactly what we are about too, we have the Banana Family and we love them so much.”
IMG_5339
The Banana Movement will be hosting a brunch at the Voyage campsite on Sunday, 7/19, at Noon and are extending an open invitation to fellow Bananas everywhere! Check their IG @bananamovement for their official campsite location.
